Anodizing, also referred to as anodic oxidation or electrolytic oxidation, is one of the most widely used surface treatment techniques for aluminium and its alloys. The surface of the aluminium substrate is electrochemically converted to a ceramic: aluminium oxide. The produced layer offers protection against corrosion and wear, enhances haptic and visual properties and adds functionality like electrical insulation.

How are the anodizing process and the aluminium substrate with its alloying elements and impurities interrelated? What is their effect on the characteristic pore structure and thus on the surface properties? We dive into the fascinating world of anodizing and illuminate possibilities and challenges.
