Products are tending to become more complex with greater demands on performance, energy consumption, environmental impact and costs. Casting is the most used method to manufacture components, which provides enormous freedom when it comes to developing innovative, knowledge-intensive and sustainable solutions for increased industrial competitiveness.
Master of Science (60 credits) with a major in Product Development, specialisation in Materials and Manufacturing.
The performance of the products and all components are a function of, among other things design and the proper and careful selection of materials and manufacturing processes. This online Master’s programme is interdisciplinary and includes aspects such as:
- solidification of cast metals, cast metals processes, heat treatment, defect and failure analysis
- the relationship between mould filling, solidification of metals, defect formation and performance of castings
- predictive tools to simulate the complex relationship between the cast metal and the processes that make it possible for the engineer to further optimize cast components without compromising performance.
The courses are mostly web based, for example through video lectures, discussion forums and e-meetings. Meetings in Jönköping for laboratory work can occur once or twice per course.
You can study full-time or half-time, which means that you can choose to combine your work with studies. You will, as a student from a bachelor program, get a specialised profile with strong links to the business community.
All courses are in English, as the programme recruits both Swedish and international students. Lecturers and experts from our international partners are also an important element.
The Master’s programme is developed in a collaboration between the School of Engineering, Swedish Foundry Association, Swerea SWECAST and the foundry industry. The industry is involved in lecturers, with expertise, study visits, and through a collaboration on relevant projects.
Through the courses it is possible to collaborate with partner companies, which facilitates the connection between theory and current professional practice. The courses offer the students opportunities to work with problems/challenges from professional practice related to current topics on the courses. The mixture of professionals and students from the bachelor level enables both networking and a connection between theory and practice throughout the programme.
The programme qualifies you for services in product development, the purchasing and quality departments at the foundries and end users of cast components, and it allows for a research career at institutions and/or universities.

The applicant must hold the minimum of a bachelor’s degree (i.e the equivalent of 180 ECTS credits at an accredited university) with at least 90 ECTS credits in materials and manufacturing, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, engineering physics, or equivalent.
Applicants with a degree in chemical engineering and engineering physics must have studied relevant courses within materials engineering, manufacturing technology, thermodynamics and solid mechanics. Applicants with a degree in chemical engineering must also have studied relevant courses in physics.
The bachelor’s degree should comprise a minimum of 21 credits in mathematics. Proof of English proficiency is required.
