Forskarstuderande Anna-Lena Ekdahl: Teaching and learning part-whole relations of natural numbers

The aim of this thesis is to investigate teaching and learning of whole number arithmetic, building on a structural approach to additive relations, which says that children need to discern the part-whole relations of the ten first numbers for developing arithmetic skills.

Data is collected from one intervention study conducted in South African early primary grades and a second intervention where a group of Swedish preschool teachers and their five-year-old children participated. Principles from variation theory are used in the design of the interventions as well in the analysis of data.
