Jérôme Landré Named Teacher of the Year

Jérôme Landré, Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering, was named Teacher of the Year by the school’s students.

“This means a lot to me because the award comes from the students themselves. They are the ones best able to judge how I do my job, and I’m happy and proud that they’re satisfied with my courses,” says Jérôme.

Jérôme accepted the award to thunderous applause from students and staff at the School of Engineering’s graduation ceremony at Jönköping Concert & Congress at Elmia on 5 June. He teaches courses in web development and operating systems, among other subjects, in the programmes Software Engineering and Mobile Platforms, Embedded Systems, and Graphic Design and Web Development.

Students Are Building the Future

“My grandfather René was an important person in my life. He didn't go to school very much, but he learned by doing and lived a good life anyway. Studying at university opens up great opportunities—and continuing to be curious and learning throughout life turns people into responsible citizens who contribute to society. Students are building the future,” says Jérôme. 

Three Principles

He explains that he applies three principles in his teaching: inclusion, flexibility, and positivity.

“Positivity is contagious, and I encourage my students to maintain a positive mindset and to believe that they’ll pass the course if they put in the effort. I remind my students that I’m just a tutor and that they’re responsible for their own learning,” says Jérôme, continuing:

“I also include images related to the French language (just a little), everyday tips and tricks (where positivity fits in), and license plates (yes, I know it sounds strange, but it works). This approach has worked very well, so I’m going to keep improving my courses this way."

Doesn’t feel like he’s getting older

As a teacher, Jérôme doesn’t feel like he’s getting older, since he’s constantly working with young students.

“I love teaching and helping students discover new things. Teaching computer science is also a challenge because the field is evolving very quickly. New tools and techniques come out every year, and I constantly need to add new content to the courses. It’s time-consuming, but I enjoy it."

"There are also major challenges ahead: climate change, sustainability, war, pandemics… Students must be prepared to face them. A positive mindset helps – seeing that there are no problems, only solutions to be found."
