It is estimated that a cyberattack occurs somewhere in the world every 39 seconds and costs businesses an average of $4.45 million in 2023. Most of these attacks directly or indirectly target small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs are particularly vulnerable as they often do not have the capabilities or resources that larger companies have to secure their environment and train their employees to be more aware of cybersecurity. Thus, awareness raising in SMEs is crucial.

Current problems

When adopting awareness-raising activities, SMEs face several factors influencing their choice and the extent to which they can adopt them. For instance, SMEs must consider financial, time and skill constraints. SMEs, compared to larger companies, do not have the same budget and dedicated cybersecurity teams and, therefore, they do not have the same opportunity to adopt and adapt awareness-raising activities to the extent that large companies can.

Towards a solution

This project will build on current and previous research by researchers at the School of Engineering (JTH) focusing on awareness in general and, more recently, awareness raising in the SME domain. We envision a maturity model that can support manufacturing SMEs in assessing their own level of cybersecurity awareness and making informed decisions regarding suitable developmental activities.
