"I'm going to spend a lot of time at Lake Vättern"
This summer, Jönköping University (JU) is offering a dose of inspiration. Every week, staff from different parts of JU share their top summer tips – everything from hidden gems and day-trip destinations to personal favourites for relaxation and that holiday feeling. This tip comes from Bengt Erlandsson, Programme Manager Architectural Engineering at the School of Engineering.
What are your plans for this summer?
This summer, I’m taking part in The Global Faculty Week at Anáhuac Mayab University in Mérida, Mexico. It’s one of Jönköping University’s newer partner universities, where I’ll be teaching contemporary architecture for two weeks.
Back home in Jönköping, I’ll be spending plenty of time in Lake Vättern, enjoying open-water swimming.

Do you have a favourite spot in Jönköping or the surrounding area?
Brandstorp, in the municipality of Habo, is a place that’s very close to my heart. It’s where I was born, and the village has a unique charm. Brandstorp Church is especially remarkable, as it is built entirely of wood, and the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The area offers easy access to both Lake Vättern and Hökensås, known for its many small lakes and excellent fishing opportunities.
Last summer, my partner Lloyd and I swam from Brandstorp to Visingsö, a distance of about 8.6 kilometres. This year, weather and water temperatures permitting, I hope to take on an even bigger challenge by swimming the roughly 12 kilometres from Baskarp to Röttle village.
What’s your best summer tip?
Spend your holiday in Sweden and go camping with a roof tent. It’s a fantastic way to experience Swedish nature and discover new places. A roof tent takes just a few minutes to set up and makes camping both easy and comfortable, with good ventilation and protection from damp ground and insects.
