A National Initiative for Sustainable Metal Casting

SMEC – Swedish Metal Casting Excellence Center – is Sweden’s national initiative to develop the next generation of sustainable metal casting. The initiative brings together leading players from industry, academia, and research institutes to strengthen Sweden’s position in advanced manufacturing, lightweight design, electrification, and circular material use.

Vision

To make Sweden Europe’s leading nation in sustainable, high-performance metal casting.

Mission

To accelerate the development of sustainable materials, processes, and products through world-leading research, testing, education, and industrial collaboration.

SMEC aims to become Europe’s leading center for research, development, education, and demonstration activities in the field of metal casting. Through a unique combination of cutting-edge research, testing and demonstration facilities, and industry-driven development projects, SMEC creates the conditions for faster implementation of new materials, processes, and digital tools.

SMEC addresses some of the industry’s most strategic challenges:

  • Increased resource efficiency and reduced carbon footprint
  • Increased use of recycled materials
  • Digitalization and AI-based process development
  • Higher product quality and more robust production
  • A shorter path from research to industrial application
  • Securing the engineering talent of the future

A central part of this initiative is the establishment of a national HPDC and megacasting platform where new manufacturing concepts can be developed, verified, and demonstrated in collaboration with Swedish industry. The platform will serve as an accelerator for the vehicles, energy systems, and industrial systems of the future.

SMEC is owned by Jönköping University and the Swedish Foundry Association, and is based on close collaboration with RISE and leading industry partners such as Volvo Cars, the Volvo Group, and Scania. Together, they are creating a national innovation ecosystem that strengthens Swedish industrial competitiveness, contributes to the green transition, and ensures that Sweden remains a leading industrial nation in the future.
