With the ambition to position MMTC more clearly as “the transformation centre.” This seminar is an opportunity to explore what that could mean for our research and education activities as well as collaborations and partnerships. The session will provide an overview of key theories and perspectives on transformation, consider how current research relates to these ideas, and explore the foundations for a research and collaboration agenda moving forward. 

A key part of the seminar will be discussion and co-creation. We invite colleagues from MMTC and across JIBS to contribute their perspectives, share connections to their own research, and help identify opportunities for new collaborations around transformation-related topics. This seminar is intended as a starting point rather than a one-off discussion. The ideas and connections emerging from the session will feed into further work and follow-up activities as we strengthen MMTC’s transformation focus.

About the speaker
Björn Liljeqvist has a background in embedded systems engineering and is the author of several popular books on efficient study skills. He studied, and later taught, at Chalmers University of Technology before starting BrainGain Education AB, where he teaches study skills to students and teachers across the country. Björn is an honorary doctor at Lund University and the past international chairman of Mensa. He lives in Solna with his wife and daughter.

When Is a Prediction Enough?
A model that cannot express uncertainty is not ready to support decisions.

ABSTRACT
A model can perform well on average while leaving us without enough information to act on a particular prediction. What supports its answer? How uncertain is it? And how much confidence should we place in the explanation?

This lecture explores these questions through two recurring themes in my research: explanations and uncertainty. Beginning with my first paper on explaining machine-learning models in 2004, I connect approaches that reveal broad patterns in model behaviour with explanations of individual predictions. Along the way, I discuss why differences between models can improve predictions, how uncertainty can be quantified and calibrated, and what statistical guarantees tell us about predictive reliability.

The main focus is Calibrated Explanations, which brings local explanations together with calibrated predictions and uncertainty information. Through visual examples, I show how uncertainty can change our interpretation of an explanation, how the question being asked affects what is explained, and how alternative model outcomes can be explored. The aim is to clarify what explanations and uncertainty contribute to assessing whether a prediction provides enough support for a decision, and where their limits lie.

On 17 September, School of Education and Communication at Jönköping University, is hosting an afternoon event which will focus on the security policy situation and Swedish society’s preparedness at a time of heightened global tensions.

The afternoon will begin with a public lecture entitled ‘Russia’s challenge to global security’, delivered by Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi, Honorary Doctor at School of Education and Communication. Paasikivi is one of Sweden’s best-known voices on issues of security and defence.. The lecture will be held in English and will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.

After a short break, the afternoon will continue with a panel discussion (held in Swedish) on war preparedness – the challenges, solutions and society’s shared responsibility. How can public authorities, businesses and other societal actors prepare for crises and, ultimately, war? What are the most significant challenges today, and what is needed to strengthen our collective preparedness?

The panellists are:

•    Joakim Paasikivi, Lieutenant Colonel and Honorary Doctor at School of Education and Communication

•    Marco Nilsson, Professor and conflict researcher, Jönköping University

•    Jonas Petri, Director of Defence and Head of the Emergency Preparedness Unit, County Administrative Board

•    Nils Arin, Head of the Department for Crisis Preparedness and Civil Defence, the Swedish Board of Agriculture

•    A representative from the Swedish Civil Defence Agency

The panel discussion will be moderated by Jesper Boesen, Head of Internationalisation and Collaboration at the School of Education and Communication

The discussion will be held in Swedish and will be followed by questions from the audience.

The event is being organised in conjunction with School of Education and Communication’s newly launched bachelor’s programme ‘Society and Security’ and the master’s programme ‘Conflict, Risk and International Security (CRIS)’.

A number of places in the JU auditorium will also be made available to the general public and other interested staff at Jönköping University.
