Title: Conceptual Patterns for Intelligent Systems Subtitle: How Human Thinking Can Aid in Addressing AI Challenges
Abstract: Artificial intelligence has rapidly advanced with modern systems being able to replicate and even outperform humans in many domains. Trained on vast amounts of text and data rather than experiences, these systems (typically) lack meaningful grounding in the real world. This means that they often make mistakes due to a lack of conceptual understanding. In comparison, human cognition emerge from repeated embodied experiences, thus, directly grounding the learned concepts in the real world. Cognitively these experiences are generalised and abstracted into conceptual patterns that lay the semantic foundation for expressions, reasoning and creative thinking. By turning these conceptual patterns into machine readable formats and integrating them into the systems, it is possible to "humanise AI's intelligence". In this talk, I will share some of my work on this topic. Examples will be given from systems dealing with abstract reasoning as well as more embodied systems within cognitive robotics.
