Research

Mass-customization is one of the most important production strategy for manufacturing companies to stay competitive today. Its primary objective is to maximize customer satisfaction by providing customer specific solutions with near mass-production efficiency. Companies that succeeded to reap the benefits of mass-customization decades could in many segments secure a competitive advantage and outpace their competitors.

To achieve a high degree of product customization (or even personalization) an increasing number of companies automate their engineering processes so that the customization is based not merely on standardized pre-manufactured modules but also on technical solutions adapted to each specific order. This movement is commonly referred to as design automation and has its roots not only in mechanical engineering but also in computer science.

Joel Johansson's research has considered:

  • the flexibility of design automation systems
  • knowledge bases containing conflicting rules
  • the automation of the finite element analysis process
  • complexity management in design automation
