Since May 2025, Jönköping University has been a member of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), an international coalition working to develop the way in which research and research achievements are assessed.

Membership means that JU endorses CoARA’s principles of promoting high-quality, transparent, and inclusive research evaluation.

CoARA was established on the initiative of the European Commission, in collaboration with Science Europe and the European University Association. The aim is to reform the system for assessing research and research merit and to foster an international consensus. More than 800 organisations around the world have joined CoARA.

Those involved in the work include higher education institutions, public authorities, interest groups and research funders.

CoARA in Sweden and at JU

In Sweden, work on CoARA is coordinated within the Swedish national chapter, which brings together higher education institutions, interest groups and research funding bodies. Together, these organisations aim to implement CoARA’s guidelines at national level. The chapter is led by the Swedish Association of Universities and University Colleges (SUHF) and aims to create more inclusive, fair and sustainable ways of evaluating research.

In autumn 2026, JU drew up an action plan for its work with CoARA. The action plan includes, amongst other things, the development of a portfolio of achievements that better highlights different types of academic contributions. Executive Vice President Eleonor Fransson leads the work with CoARA at JU together with the Strategic Committee for Research and HR.
