One of the greatest success factors of Jönköping University is its closeness to, and partnerships with, industry and the surrounding society. Education programs and research projects are conducted in close collaboration with strategically selected companies and governmental institutions. This is a win-win situation for both students and external partners: students gain industrial work experience while companies may find future employees through the collaborations.

Finding a thesis topic

Experience tells us that students generally find it difficult to find a suitable topic for their thesis work. We here describe two approaches. The first approach should be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, it is the most common approach taken by students. The second represents an ideal path that all students should try to take.

How to not find a thesis topic

Just before the thesis course starts, the student searches the web ad hoc for company announcements of pre-defined thesis projects. In many cases, such projects are focused on engineering tasks or practical software development. The student and company representative agrees on which topic the student should pursue. During the thesis course, the student then tries to reformulate the thesis project to make it scientifically grounded. The student finds it hard to find a motivated faculty advisor, because the pre-defined topic does not allow too much creative control being transferred to the academic side.
