New migration rules for non-EU/EEA students
On 11 June 2026, several new migration rules took effect which will have an impact on you as a student.
Below are changes for students at Pathway/Bachelor and Master levels
Notification of Swedish address
A student with a study permit must notify the Migration Agency of the Swedish address where he/she will be living while studying. The notification must be made no later than 30 days after entering Sweden.
If you are already in Sweden and receive a decision on an extension application after 11 June, you need to notify the change within 30 days of the decision.
A student who changes their address must notify the Migration Agency of the change of address within 30 days of the move.
The notification can be made by updating the temporary address under My Pages in Ladok for Students External link, opens in new window.. You do not have to contact the Migration Agency.
If a student registers with the Swedish Population Registry and receives a Swedish personal number, he/she must notify Jönköping University of their Swedish personal number. After that, any permanent changes in address should be made through Skatteverket External link, opens in new window.. To notify us of a Swedish personal number, visit the JU Service Center on campus. See the information about the Swedish personal number on our Student Web Opens in new window..
Acceptable progress in studies
Study permits issued after 11 June 2026:
- During the first year with a study permit, you are required to pass a minimum of 62.5% of the full-time credits (37.5 credits of if 60 credits during first year).
- During the second, and subsequent, year(s), you are required to pass at least 75% of the new full-time credits per year (45 credits if 60 credits during the year).
Acceptable progress is reviewed based on the number of credits passed during the time stated on your permit(s).
The Migration Agency may revoke a study permit or deny an extension application (issued after 11 June 2026) if a student has not completed sufficient credits. There can be exceptions, but only the Migration Agency can answer questions about what those can be.
Student with a permit granted before 11 June will have their study progress reviewed according to the old rules until an extension permit issued after 11 June is up for extension.
It is important that you contact your study counsellor if you feel that you are having trouble with your classes. If you feel that your studies are suffering because you experience worry and homesickness, you can contact our Student Health Center.
Allowed hours for paid work
Students at Pathway/bachelor or master level will be allowed to work a maximum of 15 hours per week from September to May (paid work).
Exceptions:
- Paid work that is done for the university (student ambassador, student union work, or other administrative work), paid internship/work placement, or paid work that is related to the student’s study programme.
- During June, July, and August.
The Migration Agency can revoke the study permit if the student has worked more than 15 hours per week. For current students with a valid study permit, this change will take effect when applying for an extension of the study permit after 11 June 2026.
If you are currently working more than 15 hours per week on your current study permit, you have time to re-arrange your work schedule before you apply for an extension.
It is when the work was done that is considered, not when payment was received.
Unpaid internships are exempt from the limit on work hours.
Changing type of residence permit
Restriction on the possibility to change from a study permit to a different type of permit from within Sweden (such as work permit or family permit).
After 11 June 2026, the student must have completed their degree programme and received their degree certificate to be able to be granted a different permit from within Sweden. If this condition is not met, the student must leave Sweden and apply for the new permit from their home country.
This means that a student who is about to complete their degree programme should submit their new application before the current study permit expires and then submit additional information such as a certificate of completed studies as soon as possible (degree certificate or Ladok transcript with degree information).

Family members who want to study
A person who has a residence permit as a family member of a student (with a study permit), will be required to pay application and tuition fees for studies at bachelor or master level. This requirement will take effect for studies starting in Autumn 2027 or later.
Family member's permit
The person who holds a study permit is the primary residence permit holder and a family member’s residence permit is strongly connected to the primary permit. If the student has their permit revoked, the Migration Agency can revoke the family member’s residence permit as well.
