Course Contents

The course consists of four modules:
• Language Proficiency 1 (7.5 credits)
• Literature in the English Language 1 (7.5 credits)
• Grammar and Phonetics (7.5 credits)
• Culture & Society (7.5 credits)

Language Proficiency 1 (7.5 credits)
Språkfärdighet 1 (7,5 hp)

Content
• Study of English linguistic structures as well as differences between English and other languages, with a special emphasis on Swedish
• Oral and written language proficiency exercises focusing on production, reception and interaction in relation to various texts and with consideration of relevant source criticism

Examination and grades
The module is examined by:
• Written assignment 3 credits (U/G/VG)
• Oral presentation 3 credits (U/G/VG)
• VOC/MCT test 1.5 credits (U/G)


Literature in the English Language 1 (7.5 credits)
Engelskspråkig litteratur 1 (7,5 hp)

Content
• Study of basic concepts, definitions and analytical methods of relevance for literary studies
• Study of fictional texts from English-speaking countries and cultures of the world presented through various genres and media forms
• Text-analytical exercises dealing with social and cultural aspects of relevance for the texts studied, including gender and multiculturalism

Examination and grades
The module is examined by:
• Written assignment 4 credits (U/G/VG)
• Written assignment 1.5 credits (U/G/VG)
• Seminar 2 credits (U/G)

Grammar and Phonetics (7.5 credits)
Grammatik och fonetik (7,5 hp)

Content
• Study of English grammar
• Study of English phonetics and pronunciation
• Study of structural differences between English and some other languages



Examination and grades
The module is examined by:
• Written examination in grammar 6 credits (U/G/VG)
• Written examination in phonetics 1.5 credits (U/G/VG)

Culture & Society (7.5 credits)
Kultur & Samhälle (7,5 hp)

Content
• Study of contemporary social conditions in various English-speaking countries and cultures from a historic perspective
• Study of linguistic variation in various English-speaking countries and cultures
• Study of popular cultural phenomena in various English-speaking countries and cultures

Examination and grades
The module is examined by:
• Written assignment 5 credits (U/G/VG)
• Oral presentation 2.5 credits (U/G/VG)

Prerequisites

General entry requirements and English 6 or English B or the equivalent. Exemption is granted from the requirement in Swedish.
