Thermodynamics and Metal Casting Technology 7.5 credits

Course Contents

The course covers fundamental theoretical knowledge of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid flow related to manufacturing technology and metal casting. The course also aims to provide students with fundamental and in-depth knowledge of component production using cast metallic materials, including casting design, material properties, and manufacturing processes. Throughout all stages, a technical and scientific approach is used, involving both systematic methods and mathematical calculations to analyze and assess solutions and related problems. The course includes the following topics: - Definition of thermodynamic terms: enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs energy, and phase diagrams. - Thermodynamic laws. - Heat transfer: conduction, convection, and thermal radiation; transient and steady state heat transfer and applications. - Fluid mechanics: flow regimes (laminar and turbulent), convective heat transfer, the Bernoulli equation, and applications. - Basic principles for manufacturing components by casting. - Cast materials, solidification processes, microstructure, and properties. - The relationship between the casting process, microstructure, and properties of casting alloys. - Formation of shrinkage and gas porosity. - Rules of thumb for casting design, casting construction, and material selection. - Introduction to computer simulation of the casting process.
