## About the programme
Behind every product you use, an engineer chose the material, designed the component and made it possible to manufacture. This programme combines mechanical engineering, materials engineering and product development, preparing you to design products and processes that help people and solve real-world challenges**.** Unlike traditional mechanical engineering programmes, the practice of the profession is integrated throughout the curriculum. You start designing complex systems in teams on day one and continue developing new components every semester. By the time you graduate, you will have built a portfolio of engineering designs and be ready for the next step in your career.
### Engineer the products of tomorrow
You will build a solid foundation in mechanical engineering with a clear focus on engineering materials, manufacturing and product development, skills that are increasingly sought after by product-developing and manufacturing companies worldwide. You will work with advanced materials, sustainable product development and real industry challenges, while using digital engineering tools such as CAD, simulation of components and manufacturing processes, and increasingly AI-supported ways of working. You will also gain insight into how AI and data-driven technologies are transforming product development and manufacturing. Throughout the programme, sustainability is integrated into all design projects, from material selection and design to manufacturing and finished products, and the programme is built to develop every student’s teamwork and communication skills.
### Learn by doing
The programme is built on the best way of learning: applying what is presented in the classroom immediately in design projects. The streamlined curriculum has been developed to help student teams advance their design projects, and advanced manufacturing processes, computer simulations, and materials characterisation and testing are integral parts of this project-based programme. You will learn all aspects of product design, development and manufacturing while learning to collaborate and communicate effectively.
### Close to research and industry
Jönköping University is a leading Swedish environment for materials and manufacturing research and hosts SMEC, the Swedish Metalcasting Excellence Center, where Volvo Group, Volvo Cars, Scania and the Swedish Foundry Association develop sustainable and digitalised next-generation manufacturing. Your studies connect directly to the world of materials and manufacturing through industry projects, guest lecturers from industry, study visits and an annual career fair. The programme also includes an Industrial Placement Course, where you gain practical experience working at a company, build professional networks and strengthen your career opportunities.
### An international study environment
The programme is taught entirely in English and offers a truly international and multicultural learning environment, bringing together students from Sweden and around the world. An integrated internationalisation semester gives you the opportunity to study at one of the School of Engineering’s more than 100 partner universities worldwide or complete your industrial placement abroad.
### Your future career
After graduation, you’ll be ready for roles such as product development engineer, materials engineer, mechanical engineer, production engineer or design engineer. Engineers who connect engineering design with materials, product development and manufacturing are in demand across the manufacturing industry, not only in Sweden but all over the world. Combined with the practical experience from your design projects throughout the programme, you will have built a strong foundation for your future career.
Alternatively, you can start developing your own designs and products and become an entrepreneur, or continue your studies at master’s level, for example through the master’s programme in Materials Engineering for the Manufacturing Industry at the School of Engineering.
