Overview

Pathway for International Sports makes it possible for you as an international student to continue practicing your career in sports, while preparing for your future studies in higher education on a Pathway Programme. We offer two tracks, the Dual Career Track and the Elite Track.

On the Dual Career Track, your focus is to utilize your skills and knowledge that you have gained from your career in sports to progress into a parallel career that starts at Jönköping International Business School or another university when you have completed your Pathway and gained eligibility. On the Elite Track, you have many of the same opportunities for a dual career, and even more time to focus on your sport, by bringing what you learn on the Pathway and following programmes into developing yourself and your organisation.

Pathway for International Sports includes placement in an organisation, sports club, association, event or team where you can reach your full potential and apply new-found knowledge in practice. We have also created great capabilities within the programme to allow for placement within esports, like event organisations for LANs or DreamHack, or as a coach or tester. You will also have time to spend summer in Sweden.

Dual career

Pathway for International Sports is both a Pathway Programme, and a way for you to continue practicing as an athlete, sportsman, sportswoman or player on an elite level. We offer two different tracks depending on what you want to acheive, that are both created to give the very best opportunities for a parallel academic career and a career in sports, a dual career. We have also made sure that your development and growth is scaffolded both academically and in your chosen sport, by ample opportunities for interaction and cooperation between the classroom and the placement. This scaffolding is created in partnership with NYSA Sweden.

Placement courses

What is a placement? As an Elite Athlete Friendly University (EVL), it is important for us at JU to offer a way for you to study and practice sports at the same time. To make that possible, we offer placement courses within an organisation, sports club, association, team, company or event for international students. This means that you can train, practice, compete and and develop within an academic programme, and that you are a full-time student. This has multiple benefits, one being that you will have access to our facilties and teachers to develop leadership skills, transferable skills and other important skills. Another benefit is that you are eligible for a residence permit for academic studies in Sweden, as you are a full-time student.

Finding a placement

Depending on which track you choose, you have more or fewer placement courses. We recommend that you have a placement in mind when applying, but it is also possible to apply without a placement. In that case you will first be placed in one of our default placements, a sports association at JU. Then, we will help you match with one of our partners. Through our partnership with NYSA Sweden External link, opens in new window., it is possible that your placement is already in place when applying.

Dual Career Track

Bring new skills into your career in sports, and make sure to have a solid foundation for life. This track has a more academic direction, and offers opportunities for you to become eligible for programmes at JU that require both English (IELTS 6.5) and Mathematics. It also includes more preparation for academic language use. In total, over the two semesters of the one-year programme, you will have placement courses corresponding to 10 credits, around 6 hours per week on average.

Elite Track

Gain knew knowledge to go even further in your career in sports. This track makes you eligible for all JU programmes that require a language level of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, and has a focus on your development as a professional athlete supported by a secondary academic career. Over the two semester of the one-year programme, you will have placement courses corresponding to 25 credits, around 16 hours per week on average.

Two different options

When you apply to the Pathway for International Sports Programme, you have two options: either you apply with a placement, or without a placement.

Applying with a placement agreement already in place

If you are already in contact with a possible placement, all that is needed is a signed form, an assurance that you will be allowed placement and that we are able to conduct education based on certain requirements. The requirements for you and the placement are listed in the form.

Applying without a placement

We know it can be difficult to find a placement without being recruited by one of our partners, but it is still possible to apply to Pathway for International Sports. Instead of an assurance from a placement, we will ask that you submit a filled and signed form with your application that describes your current level as an athlete, your aspirations and hopes, your current skills and abilities, and your aims with a dual career. We will share that information with possible placements. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a placement in all sports, but we will do our very best.

With placement

Contact the organisation, sports club, association, team, company or event where you wish to do your placement courses, and ask them to fill and sign the form below.

The form is an agreement between you as a student, the university and the placement that we will conduct education together.

When the form has been signed, attach it to your formal application to the programme.

Without placement

If you are applying without a placement, it is important to understand that it is not possible to start the programme without a placement. We will do our very best to find a placement that is perfect for you, and we will start with a default placement in one of the university sports associations.

We will then work to match your profile and preferences with our partners to propose a placement in an organisation, sports club, association, team, company or event.

Pre-assessment of eligibility and guarantee place

Students on the Pathway for International Sports programme may be pre-assessed when applying to the programme. This means that your eligibility to a programme at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) is assessed before you are admitted to Pathway for International Sports, and when you have started the Pathway Programme, you can apply to a follow-up programme at JIBS. We will assist you in the application process. You will have a guarantee place on the programme that you have applied for. Upon completion of the Pathway Programme you will have:

  • direct entry to a degree programme at Jönköping University, without any further testing
  • the English language preparation in reading, writing, listening and speaking necessary for enrollment in degree programmes at Jönköping University
  • depending on your chosen track, the necessesary level in Mathematics for enrolment on all JIBS degree programmes

A Letter of Acceptance to the degree programme will be issued after the successful completion of the Pathway Programme as long as the degree programme has not been cancelled or changed. It is possible that one such change is a change in tuition fee. You will be notified of any changes by our Admission Office. If you have applied for a degree programme with a guarantee place, you will be pre-assessed for admission to the programme. The condition for that admission is that you successfully complete the Pathway Programme and pay the tuition fee for the degree programme on time.

Without pre-assessment or applying to a follow-up programme

Even if you aim to apply for another university in Sweden, upon completion you will have:

  • eligibility in English and Mathematics, depending on your chosen track
  • a set of transferable skills necessary for life-long learning
  • support in adjusting to the demands, challenges and expectations of higher education
  • acclimatization to Swedish culture making it easier to live and study in Sweden

In addition, at the end of the Pathway Programme, you will receive a certificate of completion demonstrating skills equivalent to the Swedish high school course English 6. This is the most common English language level required for entering higher education in Sweden. You can read more about corresponding levels in other countries here.
