Educate✕AcademicTeachership – Constructive Alignment
Event graphic

About the event

Have you ever designed a course you were proud of, only to wonder why students still seemed to miss the point? The gap between what we intend students to learn and what our course design actually makes possible is one of the most common problems in higher education teaching, and it is also one of the most fixable.

The theme for this event in the Educate✕AcademicTeachership series is constructive alignment, with a specific focal point on the question: How can we, in higher education, work to ensure that our students develop coherent, long-term and transferable skills that are useful in their professional lives?

We will highlight the connection from a single classroom activity to the course, the programme, the institution as a whole and professional life. We will also briefly present new resources from Educate, but the main discussion is about the why and how of alignment in practice, and why closing that gap matters more than ever in a higher education landscape shaped by new expectations and the need for new competencies.

The event also includes a microlecture on academic teachership, a method where university teachers continuously and systematically reflect on, investigate, and develop their pedagogical methods to improve student learning. During this microlecture, we will discuss constructive alignment as a tool for teaching.

The event is inspired by the TEDx event format, which ensures it will be both informative and engaging. As we explore academic teachership, we aim to empower teachers to solve pedagogical challenges, foster collegial learning and co-creation, and expand their pedagogical repertoire to facilitate lifelong learning.
