The development of European Universities is part of a European Union initiative to strengthen and promote higher education and research in Europe. The vision is to increase the mobility of students, doctoral candidates and staff, as well as new models of cooperation and the development of common curricula and degrees.

The initiative was launched in 2019 as part of the EU's strategy to create a European Education Area. The aim of the European Universities is to foster cooperation between universities in different EU countries and to create cross-border alliances of higher education institutions. Through education and culture, universities contribute to building a stronger European identity, thereby strengthening the cohesion and future competitiveness of the EU.

Today, there are around 60 European Universities, which together include more than 500 higher education institutions, with an average of nine institutions in each alliance. This means that at the European level, around 10% of higher education institutions are part of a European University. Sweden is well represented with 24 HEIs participating in various alliances.

Enhanced cooperation within Erasmus+

The European University Initiative (EUI) is part of the EU's "Strategic Framework for European Cooperation in Education and Training" and aims to promote new forms of deeper cooperation through transnational alliances. The European Universities are supported by the European Commission's Erasmus+ program. UHR is the national agency for the education part of Erasmus+ and has information responsibility for European Universities in Sweden.
