Exploring the Digital Detox Journey Among Generation Y Instagram Users

Social media has become an integral part of everyday life, offering both benefits and challenges. A new study published in Information Technology & People examines how Generation Y users of Instagram experience a digital detox — a temporary break from the platform designed to counteract its negative effects.

The research, co-authored by Adele Berndt, alongside Matiena Marie Scheppe and Anna Luise Seiffen, follows participants through the full detox journey. Using focus groups, self-completion diaries, and in-depth interviews, the study provides insights into motivations, lived experiences, and post-detox behaviours.

Key findings:

  • Motivations: Participants sought to regain control of their time and reduce stress linked to constant comparison on Instagram.
  • During detox: Many reported relief, happiness, and increased productivity, but also struggled with boredom, disorientation, and cravings to scroll.
  • Post-detox: Some returned to old habits (a “boomerang effect”), while others adopted more mindful use patterns or re-evaluated Instagram’s role in their lives.

The study highlights that a digital detox is less about permanent disconnection and more about developing intentional and conscious social media use. It also points to the responsibility of social media platforms to support healthier digital habits through design and user tools.

“By following one group of participants throughout the detox, we were able to capture the full journey — from motivation to reflection,” says Adele Berndt. “This provides valuable insights into how young adults can reshape their digital lives.”
