Actionable Insights - Data Visualisation and Storytelling 5 credits
Course Contents
Organisations generate vast amounts of data, but only those who can turn that data into insight can shape strategy and drive decisions. You need to interpret data, identify what matters, and construct narratives that produce actionable insights. This course teaches you how to analyse data systematically, visualise it effectively, weave and tell stories that clarify complex situations, reveal patterns, and make compelling recommendations. These skills are fundamental for professionals working in digital business and technological contexts where technical outputs must translate into business recommendations that stakeholders understand and act upon.
The course covers data fundamentals, including types of data, statistical summarisation, and aggregation techniques. You will learn visualisation principles and practice applying them to real datasets. We examine how to build narrative structures that guide audiences through complexity, how to frame insights for decision-making, and how to craft stories and learn the art of storytelling for different stakeholders. The course addresses ethical responsibilities in data presentation and teaches you to identify when visualisations are used to mislead rather than inform. Through hands-on assignments you will create dashboards, write analytical reports, and develop presentations that combine visual and narrative elements to drive business action.
After this course, you will be able to work with raw data and determine which analytical, visualisation, and narrative approaches yield actionable insights. You will produce dashboards, reports, and presentations that tell coherent stories with data. You will recognise bias in data sources and understand your ethical obligations when presenting findings. These capabilities will allow you to serve as a bridge between technical analysis and business decision-making, translating numbers into narratives that influence organisational strategy.
