Designing Performance Management Systems 5 credits

Course Contents

Organisations struggle with performance management systems that fail to motivate employees or drive meaningful results. Traditional annual reviews often create frustration rather than growth, while new digital tools promise improvements but lack strategic integration. You need sophisticated frameworks that balance financial metrics with human development, ensuring your performance systems enhance organisational capability rather than merely checking compliance boxes. You will examine the architecture of effective performance systems, beginning with budget and cost considerations that anchor HR investments in business reality. The curriculum covers balanced scorecards as strategic alignment tools, explores 360-degree feedback mechanisms, and analyses compensation structures that influence behaviors. You will study performance matrix development, investigate high-impact management tools, and evaluate AI-powered digital platforms reshaping performance measurement. Critical attention focuses on work environment assessment, including diversity management and employee well-being initiatives, while maintaining rigorous analysis of each approach's strengths and limitations. Upon completion, you will design comprehensive performance management systems that integrate multiple measurement approaches strategically. You will confidently evaluate and select appropriate tools for specific organisational contexts, balancing quantitative metrics with qualitative development needs. Your ability to critique existing systems and recommend evidence-based improvements will enable you to contribute meaningfully to performance management initiatives that enhance both individual growth and organisational effectiveness.
