Financial Literacy for Managers 5 credits
Course Contents
Accounting is often described as the language of business, and as a future manager you need to understand and communicate financial information with confidence. Decisions at every level rely on accounting insights, and your ability to interpret and explain these numbers to different audiences is essential for credibility and impact.
In this course, you will build financial literacy through an overview of key accounting forms produced by organisations. You will examine legally mandated financial statements and explore internal control systems such as operational and capital budgeting, performance indicators, and their role in translating strategic objectives into operational goals. Using a case-based approach, you will practice applying these tools in managerial contexts—making investment decisions, securing financing, and managing trade-offs through operational budgets. You will also learn to incorporate risk by planning scenarios and evaluating financial implications.
By the end, you can interpret and communicate financial reports to internal and external stakeholders, assess budgets for decision-making, and connect financial data to strategic priorities. You will be able to analyse investment proposals, evaluate resource allocation, and use accounting tools to support informed decisions under uncertainty. Most importantly, you will develop the confidence to engage in financial conversations that shape organisational outcomes.
