If you have a functional disability that makes it hard to read text, it is possible to listen to your course literature using talking books.

We are using the Legimus service where you can download and read talking books. Legimus can be used with your computer, phone or reading tablet. In order to use this service, you need an account which the library can help you create.

Please contact the library at talbok.biblioteket@ju.se to get started.

A talking book is a recorded complete version of a published book.

Talking books and audiobooks – what is the difference?

The talking book and the audiobook are similar. They are both books that you can listen to. They differ in the way that the talking book is always produced with accessibility in mind. In MTM:s (Swedish Agency for Accessible Media) talking books speech and text is often combined in a single format. Talking books are also searchable and browsable and include descriptions for non-text content such as images and diagrams.

A person with a functional disability that results in he or she needing adaptive measures in order to be able to read a published work has the right to borrow talking books.

Examples of functional disabilities are:

  • Visual impairment
  • Physical impairment
  • Mental impairment
  • Reading and writing problems
  • Hearing impairment (for hearing training)
  • Temporary reading disability
  • Cognitive functional disabilities (e.g., traumatic brain injuries, aphasia, autism, ADHD, dementia conditions, whiplash injuries and mental functional impairment)
