Swedish Ukrainian Collegial Assistance for Rehabilitation Education (SU-CARE)
In 2023 the Ukrainian Ministry of Social Policy in Ukraine reported an increase of 300,000 individuals with disabilities, including approximately 20 000 people with limb amputations. With the rapid increase in numbers of physical disabilities Ukraine is now currently facing a severe shortage of well qualified rehabilitation professionals to manage their care.
Of particular concern is the shortage of prosthetist/orthotists (ortopedingenjörer) with advanced skills to conduct clinical assessment, fabricate and fit assistive devices such as prosthetic limbs and braces to support lost body functions (orthoses) as well as physical therapists and occupational therapists who can support rehabilitation of people with disabilities, including their return to activities of daily living.
This project aims to address Ukraine's need for highly qualified prosthetist-orthotists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists by training a pool of professionals to become industry leaders, educators and clinical supervisors. This will not only increase Ukraine's capacity to provide quality care to people with disabilitieies but, most importantly, generate the competencies of current professionals so that they can contribute to educating future rehabilitation professionals on an ongoing basis and in accordance with international standards.
