Therése Bielsten is a senior lecturer in gerontology and holds a PhD in medical science. She is the program manager for the specialist nursing program in the care of older people, which is a collaboration between five universities. She also teaches gerontology, geriatrics and dementia in younger and older people.
Her dissertation work from 2020 was part of the international research program "Neighbourhoods and Dementia" and aimed to explore and describe interventions for couples where one partner has dementia, as well as to develop salutogenic and resource-oriented (with a co-researcher strategy, together with people with dementia and relatives) support that is anchored in the couple's joint life and everyday life. The support resulted in the application DemPower which involves support for couple relationship, everyday life and to maintain positive aspects and resources for as long as possible.
Therese Bielsten (co-applicant) mainly works in the project "How is care and support organized for younger people with dementia?" which examines types of support, measures and satisfaction of the persons themselves and their relatives. Other research that Therése conducts is within the project "MISU, a digital tool for improving nursing home care of persons diagnosed with BPSD (Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia): A mixed method development and evaluation", where she was a co-applicant. In the project, a modified application is tested for staff in the care of older people so that they can detect, register, evaluate and implement person-centered measures regarding BPSD in people with dementia in special housing on a daily basis. Therése is also a co-applicant in the project A guided behavioral activation-based self-help intervention (INVOLVERA) for people with dementia and depression supported by informal caregivers: feasibility study and superiority randomized controlled study. The project aims to improve the availability of psychological support for people with depression and dementia.
Since 2024, Therése is one of two Swedish representatives in the steering group for the European COST action network Ethics in dementia (EDEM)
