Research

Pia Bülow’s research focuses on communication and institutional discourse in welfare settings, such as social services, primary health care and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency. The core of her interest is the meeting and interaction between individuals and institutional representatives. Her research is concerned with people’s stories, storytelling and communicative processes during such meetings. She has been involved in several projects examining multiparty conversation, such as status meetings and CFS-schools for patients, and inter-professional groups.

Currently, Pia works on a number of projects. One of them focuses on the process of work rehabilitation. She looks at it from the perspective of patients, professionals and care managers and approaches it as an example of inter-professional teamwork. Another research project is about preventive family interventions for children and families with parental mental illness. This project is funded by the Children´s Welfare Foundation Sweden. She is also involved in a study about written stories about the stay at a sanatorium in early 1900s (with Staffan Bengtsson), and in studies about emotions in institutional encounters (with Monika Wilińska).

Pia is also a member of a research team conducting a study concerning older people with severe mental illness. This 3-year project founded by Forte (the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare) commenced in January 2016. The team includes researchers from colleagues from her own department, the Institute of Gerontology (JU), the Region Jönköping Council and Ersta Sköndal University College.

Biography

Pia Bülow works as a senior lecturer in Social Work at Jönköping University where she also holds the position of Chair in Social Work. She has been involved in teaching exchange programs at the University of Botswana and the University of the Free State in South Africa where she is appointed as Research Fellow. Pia is a member of the international research network DANASWAC (Discourse and Narrative Approaches to Social Work and Counseling).
