Research

Carin Falkner holds a PhD in Education. Her research focuses on children's and young people's leisure time, both in organized and more informal settings. In her dissertation, Falkner interprets and analyzes the meaning that computer game players create around their gaming, approaching it from a hermeneutic Bildung perspective. She has conducted research studies on folk high schools, study associations, and adult education. Over the past fifteen years, her research has increasingly centered on the mission of School Age Educare Centres (SAEC) and the professional role of teachers within them.

Currently, Falkner is involved in a research project examining what children aged ten to twelve do during their leisure time, with a focus on open recreational activities and SAEC. The aim is to explore how staff in these settings reason about children's and young people's leisure and how they plan for it. The project is led by the School of Education and Communication at Jönköping University and Linköping University. Meaningful leisure and Bildung form a recurring theme throughout Falkner’s research.
