Traditional metallographic preparation of cast iron provides little information about the solidification of the material. Coloretching with Motz reagent reveals the microsegregation patterns of Silicon in the material, which provide a detailed account of the material’s solidification procedure and structure. This Webinar provides practical guidelines on how to apply the color etching method, details about its mechanism, and useful examples of what it can tell us about Cast Iron. After the lectures, the audience is invited to discussions about the color etching technique and its potential applications for industry and research.

Date:June 15, 2021

Time: 10:00-11:00 (+ 30 min group discussion and networking)

After attending this webinar you will know more about:

  • How to color etch cast iron samples with Motz reagent
  • How the resulting color patterns emerge and may be interpreted
  • How the color etching technique can help characterization of microstructure and diagnostics of casting defects

This webinar is specifically useful for producers and users of cast iron components, particularly working with material R&D, process control and quality control related to cast iron.
