Overview
This programme is ideal for students who love to design and develop new products and/or improve existing ones. Students will use creative methods to design, visualise, develop, and test new products both virtually and physically. The programme highlights the importance of successful product realisation by having a close collaboration with well-known companies in various courses.
This master's programme has two tracks, Digitalization and Industrial Design. Students need to choose one of the two tracks. The integration of the products and their manufacturing is emphasised in the programme as well as the sustainability of the products.

Digitalization track
In the first track, Digital tools and automation in product development are in focus. Students choosing the digitalisation track will take courses oriented towards mechanical engineering with emphasis on utilizing digital tools to verify designs, re-design, automate and optimize products. The digitalization takes a wide-angle approach by including all stages of product development with special attention to design for producibility and addressing challenges tied to sustainability. The track involves hands-on, project-based courses in close collaboration with our industrial partners which are directly involved in the education through guest lectures, supervision, hosting study visits and assessment boards.
Industrial Design track
The second track focus on the consumer experience, product aesthetics and product and user interaction. The track focuses on lab-work, hands-on work with different materials, tools, and digital tools to generate design concepts. The industrial design students have access to the design studio where each student has their own workstation with a PC and digital drawing board.
Common for both tracks
Our industrial partners provide the students with real-life projects and challenges ensuring that the education has real life relevance. The students have free access to our LABs where they are encouraged to create prototypes and test their ideas. Both tracks include co-reading with the Production Engineering and Management programme to ensure that the students get the perspective of production into the product development work in an integrated manner.

After graduation
Students who have graduated from Product Design will be sought after in the job market in that they will have insights into both the creative and analytical sides of product development. The program is also preparatory for a role as PhD students in universities and institutes.
Graduates from the program will also be able to take on the task of improving the product development process in companies and proposing how to improve knowledge reuse and to make the product development more efficient. In addition to the creative aspects of the programme, engineering analyses are also trained, involving for example structural analysis and optimization.

Practical experience
To further strengthen the connection to industry and to increase practical experience the programme contains several project courses where students work closely in collaboration with various companies, e.g., the Ikea project.

Resources
JTH LABS
The program students have access to the so called JTH LABs which contains a large work area with an adjacent large and well stocked workshop. The students are spending most of their time doing hands-on work in the various courses and have free access to the many facilities we offer.
Printer farm
We find it natural to use many prototyping tools and as much as possible to test ideas and evaluate concepts. Our students have free access to our printer farm consisting of over 20 PRUSA minis and a couple of bigger printers. Happy printing!

Peter Andersson | Program Manager, Senior Lecturer|Industrial Design track

Before becoming an industrial design teacher, Peter has worked as a designer in various companies for about 10 years, such as Electrolux in Stockholm, Lenovo in Beijing, Avalon innovation in Stockholm and Inoda + Sveje in Milan. He has designed a variety of products spanning from furniture to fridges, medical robots, bikes and mobile devices. He has a master degree in design engineering from Luleå University of Technology and a master degree in design from Domus Academy in Milan. He focuses on telling a good story by design, the design process, surface modeling and visualization.
Moe Soheilian |Senior Lecturer|Industrial Design track

Meet Moe, a skilled designer with a unique blend of expertise in architectural engineering, industrial design, and research. Moe has a Bachelor's degree in Architectural Engineering, Master's in Industrial Design, and three years of research experience in Lighting science. As an architect, Moe has worked for several years in Dubai from small-scale product to large-scale architectural projects. As an industrial designer, he collaborated with companies such as IKEA for designing a chair and with ITAB, designing a self-checkout system. When it comes to the subject of product design, Moe believes that a great design should not only be aesthetically pleasing, but also evoke a strong emotional response by exploring different attributes within the product such as form, colour and texture.
Mirza Cenanovic |Senior Lecturer|Digitalisation track

Having a background in mechanical engineering and computational science, Mirza has been teaching and conducting research in the field since 2012. His research primarily focuses on development on computational methods, hence he has a strong interest in technical programming and implementation of new models. After receiving his doctorate in 2017, Mirza has been heavily involved in teaching Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, the Finite Element Method as well as other highly technical courses which involve programming and computation. Mirza lives by the philosophy of always pursuing knowledge and learning by implementation. His favorite quote is by Richard Feynman: “What I cannot create, I do not understand”
