<p><strong>Welcome to attend Johannes Schmidt&rsquo;s trial lecture for appointment as associate professor! </strong></p><p><strong>Title:</strong></p><p><em>Non-monotonic reasoning, upper and lower bounds</em></p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p><p>Non-monotonic reasoning formalisms are particularly suitable for applications in a world that is affected by constant change, as is the case in many applications in artificial intelligence (AI). In this lecture I will introduce non-monotonic reasoning and describe previous and current research efforts that try to construct faster, more efficient algorithms (upper bounds), and at the same time determine how close to optimal the newly developed algorithms are (lower bounds). Non-monotonic reasoning formalisms have numerous application areas, e.g., scientific discovery, network security, logic programming, computational biology, medical diagnosis, knowledge base updates, explainability in machine learning, decision support. When Personalization is Not Enough: A Case of RecSys

Abstract:

Recommender systems are technologies that help us navigate through the abundance amount of online content that we have at our disposal nowadays. Services such as Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon have become indispensable in our lives. They continuously analyze our behavioral patterns to estimate our future behaviors, preferences, and needs.
