Participate in a student essay contest on
South Africa-Sweden relations

Students in their third or fourth year at JU are invited to participate in an essay competition on the relationship between South Africa and Sweden. The winning essays will be published in the academic journal The Thinker.

The competition stems from an initiative from University of Johannesburg, which partnered up with the Embassy of Sweden in Pretoria and SASUF (South-Africa - Sweden University Forum). Students are invited to submit an essay of no more than 3, 000 words to one of the following categories:

  • Cultural diplomacy/issues
  • Science and technology diplomacy/issues
  • Academic/knowledge diplomacy
  • Environmental diplomacy/ issues
  • Gender issues

All entries will be judged by an independent jury of academics from both South Africa and Sweden. The author(s) of the best paper (as judged by the judges) in each of the five categories will be invited to publish their paper in a special issue of The Thinker (an academic journal published by the University of Johannesburg) which will focus on relations between South Africa and Sweden. Further prizes will be announced later.

For further info about submissions, the essay topics, as well as further guidelines, please have a look at the SASUF webpage.

The competition is open now and will close on 20 May 2022.
