The research school UPGRADE - Teacher Education and School Digitalization is a national research school funded by the Swedish Research Council. The aim is to strengthen digital competence in teacher education and to increase the proportion of teacher educators with doctoral education.

The research school is a collaboration between nine universities, all of which have strong profiles in digitalization in schools and society. The nine universities are: Umeå University (host university), University of Gothenburg, University of Gävle, Halmstad University, Jönköping University, University West, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Linnaeus University, and Mid Sweden University. In the recently launched Swedish national action plan for digitization of schools, teacher education is emphasized as crucial for preparing teachers to be able to use digital technology in meaningful ways in their professional activities. Within the graduate school, issues related to digitization in schools, preschools and teacher education in a broad sense are addressed. Key issues can be at both policy level and operational level.

This may entail studies that concern an organizational and management perspective as well as studies of teachers' and teacher educators' teaching and students' and teacher trainees' learning with digital technology, both in and outside school.

In the research school, research will be initiated in the following broadly formulated areas:

  • How are student teachers prepared for work in a digitalized school?
  • How is technology integrated and used in different teacher education programs and subjects?
  • How are approaches and methods that include digital technology further developed and incorporated through teacher education and across subjects and areas?
  • How are teacher educators developing their digital competence and how will it contribute to student teachers' knowledge in teaching and learning with digital technologies?
  • How does the digital transformation of the surrounding society affect teacher education, and how does teacher education address the opportunities and constraints of school digitalization?
