Bank
Before departing for Sweden, inquire about the possibility of using your home country bank account while abroad.
At the start of your stay in Sweden, it is practical to use your home country bank account and debit/credit card while settling in. Most internationally issued cards (Visa, Mastercard) work well in Sweden, but check for possible foreign transaction fees.
If you plan to stay for less than 12 months, your home country account may be sufficient.
For longer stays, you may consider opening a Swedish bank account. Some banks can offer a basic account before you obtain a swedish personal identity number (personnummer) or coordination number (samordningsnummer), though such accounts often have limited services.
To open a full-service account, you usually need:
- A valid passport or photo ID
- Residence permit (if applicable)
- Proof of address in Sweden
- Employment contract or proof of income
- A swedish personal identity number (personnummer) or coordination number (samordningsnummer)
Once you have your personal identity number and Swedish ID card, you can access full banking services including internet banking, BankID, and debit/credit cards.
