Below are the criteria for Docent (Associate Professor) and (Full) Professor at JIBS. If you have any questions please contact the HR department at JU.

In accordance with a decision made by the ADR in June 2016, a review process on the present criteria started at JIBS, initiated by the Research Faculty Board (RFB) in September 2016 and decided in March 2017. A second revision was made in November 2018.

The criteria should be in line with the JIBS mission: to advance the theory and practice of business, aligned with JIBS strategy.

The purpose of the criteria is for JIBS to have Docents and (full) Professors that are on par with the standards of professional academics of high international standard. They should also meet the demands that are required for a business school that strives to maintain excellence and to be considered among the top business schools internationally. This is mirrored in the specific requirements for Docent and (full) Professor respectively. Further, the criteria are set with the purpose to show that JIBS strives for Docents and (full) Professors that are committed to the full spectra of research, teaching and citizenship.

For a promotion to Docent, the Discipline will motivate and support the promotion to the RFB. The motivation is a signal to the applicant that the Discipline agrees that s/he is ready and that a promotion indicates expectations to fulfill tasks such as supervision, being a member of examining committees, examiner for PhD courses, etc. For direct recruitment of a (full) Professor, there has to be a clear strategic need – a need that is ultimately decided by the Dean.

This document shall be revised at least every third year, with the next revision no later than December 2021.

Conditions for applications for internal promotion

A person who is applying for internal promotion to (unpaid) docent (at JIBS translated to Associate Professor and in this document referred to as Docent) shall have a doctor’s degree and a current contract with JIBS. Each application must be followed by a statement by the discipline, outlining the motivation as to why the applicant should be promoted to docent at JIBS.

In case of former employees, JIBS will only consider evaluation for Docent if the applicant is still involved with the school. This refers to, for example, collaboration in research projects, involvement in teaching, and/or supervision of doctoral candidates. The JIBS RFB will decide on a case-by-case basis if it accepts a request for internal promotion from applicants without a current contract but with a continuing (unpaid or paid) affiliation with JIBS.

The applicant should have been working within his or her field of expertise for some years beyond the doctorate for promotion to Docent. Applicants should demonstrate high competences and expertise within their subject which refers to research, teaching and interactions with society and business, and with the promise of a strong international scientific standing. Of specific importance is that the applicant can show a strengthened anchoring in his/her discipline. More specifically, applicants should demonstrate their research competences, pedagogical skills and merits regarding dissemination of research, as set out below.
