Lärandemål

Upon completion of the course students should have the ability to:

Kunskap och förståelse

  • differentiate between normal and atypical development in children and adolescents
  • compare differences in obtaining a medical history on a paediatric patient and an adult
  • describe acute and chronic paediatric conditions, congenital and genetic syndromes commonly encountered by prosthetist/orthotists and evaluate the effect of age on their manifestations and treatment
  • understand laws for mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse and procedures for reporting
  • appraise literature to determine best orthotic/prosthetic practice for a wide variety of paediatric conditions
  • compare the difference between informed consent, assent, and parental permission.

Färdighet och förmåga

  • formulate an effective treatment plan with consideration to the child’s age and condition, including the selection of appropriate outcome measures
  • identify paediatric conditions which are appropriate for orthotic/prosthetic interventions
  • justify selection of orthotic/prosthetic interventions with consideration of best available evidence
  • select appropriate assessment tools and outcome measures for the child’s age and condition.

  • identify limits to their own practice/knowledge and recognise when to request assistance from others.

- common paediatric conditions requiring prosthetic or orthotic management
- orthotic and prosthetic devices for the paediatric patients
- consent versus assent
- laws and regulations when treating pediatric patients
- assessment tools and outcome measures for paediatric patients

The course is implemented in the form of lectures and tutorials.

Förkunskapskrav

General entry requirements, at least 60 credits in Prosthetics and orthotics, and completion of the course Prosthetics and orthotics, independent research project, 15 credits.

Examination och betyg

Kursen bedöms med betygen A, B, C, D, E, FX eller F.

Examination will be based upon one individual written assignment and one individual written examination.

A university lecturer will serve as examiner for this subject.
