Family Business for next-generation 7,5 hp

This course is anchored in the confidence that individuals and their associated resources, namelyhuman resources are at the centre of both organisational development and the realisation of sustainable strategy. This course underlines the added value for multiple stakeholders in aligning HR with Business so that designing strategic human resource systems becomes a strategic advantage in organisation’s Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) environment. This course stimulates students to analyse and develop strategic HR programmes for key functional aspects of the HR, among those as recruitment, reward management, employment relationships, well-being management, and talent management. It finally discusses the strategic roles of HR professionals and practitioners in the continuous formulation and implementation of strategic HR systems.

Kursinnehåll

Introduction to family business for the next-generation is based on more than 20 years of research and practical experience in family business developed by the Centre for Family Entrepreneurship and Ownership (CeFEO) at Jönköping International Business School. Thanks to an extensive network of international collaborators and partners, CeFEO offers the course a unique regional, national, and global perspective in discussing Family Business. This course aims to enhance participants’ awareness and comprehension of how next-generation family business members can approach opportunities and challenges related to the family business. The broader aim of the course is to support the development of family businesses and facilitate the process of succession and ownership transition by sharing knowledge and tools for how this can be done effectively.

The course is structured into five modules. Each module combines theory and practice, offering a balanced combination of academic knowledge and a solid connection to practice.

The topic covered in the modules are:
1. Introduction to family business. This module introduces the main characteristics of family business and depicts how and why they are different from other types of businesses.
2. Family business governance. This module presents the roles that next-generation family members can play in the family business, explore governance structures connected to the different roles, and discusses the emotional implications.
3. Sustainability, responsibility, and contribution to society. This module reflects on the relationship between ethics and behaviors of family business and deepens on the impact of family business on society, discussing the opportunity for next-generation family members.
4. Transgenerational entrepreneurship. This module focuses on entrepreneurship across generations and gender, and how to stimulate and develop an entrepreneurial spirit in next-generation family business members.
5. Succession. This module presents leadership and ownership succession issues and describes the most common choices and decisions that next-generation family members face.


Connection to Research and Practice
This course builds on the research excellence and practical relevance of the Centre for Family Entrepreneurship and Ownership, bridging the core competencies of JIBS faculty on family business and ownership. The participants will have a unique opportunity to apply the most relevant theoretical concepts to examples, cases, and experiences from family businesses. The course is tailor-made for next-generation family business members, and it is based on theories and models, real case studies, and interaction with family-owned businesses.
