Peace and Conflict Studies 15 hp

Undervisningen bedrivs på engelska.

Kursen handlar om olika typer av väpnade konflikter, så som mellanstatliga krig, inbördeskrig och terrorism. Vi kommer att studera dessa konflikter från många olika perspektiv för att förstå till exempel varför de uppstår och hur de kan lösas. Kursen är uppdelad i två delkurser. Den första fokuserar på olika sätt att se på väpnade konflikter och den andra består i att lära sig självständigt analysera en väpnad konflikt.

Module 1. Concepts, Theories and Actors, 7.5 credits
Contents

• Concepts and theories
• Different types of armed conflicts and actors
• Emergence, progress, solution and consequences of armed conflicts

Intended learning outcomes (ILO)
On completion of the course the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding
- describe the basic concepts of peace and conflict research
- describe different types of armed conflict and actors
- account for basic theories of peace and conflict research on the emergence, progress, solution and consequences of armed conflicts

Examination
The module and the intended learning outcomes above are examined with a written take home exam.

Module 2. Conflicts in the Word, 7.5 credits

• Analysis of armed conflicts
• Source criticism

Intended learning outcomes (ILO)
On completion of the course the student should be able to:

Skills and abilities
- collect information about armed conflicts
- conduct and present analyzes of armed conflicts with the help of relevant concepts and theories of peace and conflict research

Judgement and approach
- evaluate information on armed conflicts by using source-critical methods

Examination
The module is examined with a written seminar on source criticism and a written analytical project presented at a second seminar. The analytical project is written in groups of two, but students will be examined on an individual basis.

Förkunskapskrav

General entry requirements and completed 30 credits in the area of social science, or the equivalent. English proficiency is required. Exemption is granted from the requirement in Swedish.
