Shorter product life cycles, increasing number of product variants and greater volume variations affect both product development and the associated production systems. In order to maintain competitiveness production systems must often be both flexible and quick to adapt to both planned and un-planned changes. Through production systems characterized by e.g. modularity it is possible to quickly and cost-effectively change and reconfigure production systems to provide the right capacity and functionality on demand. Through a long term-view and a holistic approach when developing production systems, the manufacturing industry can avoid overinvestments and sub-optimization and be better prepared for changes. Changeable production systems - Challenges and opportunities

Abstract

Manufacturing companies need to cope with a growing degree of change. Shorter product life cycles, increasing number of product variants and greater volume variations affect both product development and the associated production systems. In order to maintain competitiveness production systems must often be both flexible and quick to adapt to both planned and un-planned changes. Through production systems characterized by e.g. modularity it is possible to quickly and cost-effectively change and reconfigure production systems to provide the right capacity and functionality on demand.
