Dany Badran

Biography

Dany Badran holds an M.Phil. in English and Applied Linguistics from Cambridge University and a Ph.D. in English Studies and Critical Linguistics from the University of Nottingham. He is an affiliated researcher at Jönköping University. Dany’s research area includes political discourse in the Middle East, stylistics, critical discourse studies, second language acquisition and refugee studies. He has written on ideology, democracy and rhetoric in the Middle East, as well as on debate, leadership and empowerment of women in the Arab world. He is currently cooperating with Dr. Marco Nilsson (leader of the research environment "Sustainable Societies" at Högskolan för lärande och kommunikation – Jönköping University) in researching the problems and coping strategies of Syrian refugees.

Dany is currently an associate professor of English and critical linguistics at the Lebanese American University - Beirut. He has taught English, rhetoric, debate and linguistics at several universities in Lebanon, the UK, Sweden and China. He has also led a number of language assessment projects (at the Lebanese American University), Monitoring and Evaluation projects (with the UNHCR) as well as youth empowerment projects (with the Anna Lindh Foundation and UNESCO) with particular focus on Intercultural Dialogue.

Finally, Dany is an active member of the International Debate Education Association (IDEA), a founding member of the Lebanon Debating Society (LDS), a certified debate trainer and adjudicator in international debate competitions. He has worked on debate projects with IDEA, the Qatar Foundation, the British Council, the Anna Lindh Foundation and SIDA. He also ran a series of workshops with the Global School (den globala skolan) on managing controversy and the teaching of controversial issues within the Swedish context.
