Hanna Ahonen är legitimerad tandhygienist och arbetar på avdelningen för odontologi och oral hälsa. Hon har en magisterexamen i oral hälsovetenskap och disputerade i juni 2022 med avhandlingen “The multifaceted concept of oral health- studies on a Swedish general population and perspectives of persons with experience of long-term CPAP-treated obstructive sleep apnea”. Syftet med avhandligen var att undersöka oral hälsa i två populationer- en generell vuxenpopulation och en specifik vuxenpopulation med personer med hypertoni och obstruktiv sömnapné. 
 

Oral hälsa är en viktig del i den allmänna hälsan. Under 2016/17 föreslog World Dental Federation en ny definition och ett teoretiskt ramverk för att beskriva oral hälsa, dess bestämningsfaktorer samt kopplingen till allmän hälsa och välbefinnande. Detta teoretiska ramverk utgjorde grunden för samtliga studier i avhandlingen. 

Hannas forskningsområde är oral hälsa där hon intresserar sig för kopplingen mellan allmän och oral hälsa med fokus på sömnmedicin men också samhällsodontologi.
