Anna Karin Axelsson har en PhD i handikappvetenskap och hennes forskningsintresse är inom området barns delaktighet i vardagen, framför allt när det gäller barn med funktionsnedsättningar.

Hennes avhandling har titeln Children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities and their participation in family activities. Det övergripande syftet i forskningen var att studera delaktighet i familjeaktiviteter hos barn med omfattande funktionsnedsättningar och att finna strategier som underlättar delaktigheten för dessa barn. Detta inkluderade också den personliga assistentens roll. Också hennes magisteruppsats fokuserade på barn med funktionsnedsättningar, en femårsuppföljning ur ett bio-psykosocialt perspektiv efter flernivåkirurgi hos barn med cerebral pares.

Anna Karin är legitimerad sjukgymnast och har klinisk erfarenhet från flera olika områden men framför allt från Barn- och ungdomshabilitering. Dessutom har hon varit ansvarig för kursen Developmental Sciences and Intervention Processes i CHILDs internationella, tvärprofessionella masterutbildning Interventions in Childhood. I nuläget kombinerar hon kliniskt arbete inom primärvård med fortsatt forskning som berör barn med funktionsnedsättningar och deras delaktighet i vardagen samt forskning inom området kommunikation hos dövblinda.
