Research
Ann-Sofie Kall’s research focuses on transitions—primarily energy transitions, but also broader environmental and societal transformations. By examining the relationships between society, technology, and nature, her work addresses questions about how knowledge, perspectives, and actors are included in shaping these transitions, as well as what futures are envisioned and what histories are told. Central to her research are the ideas embedded in our descriptions and the ways we relate to what we define as nature.
Energy, environment, and technology are key themes in Kall’s work, alongside broader questions about political processes, the roles that different actors play in influencing change, and how issues become politicized.
Kall leads the research project CRMA and the Challenges for Fossil-Free Electricity Supply in Sweden. This project investigates the social and environmental consequences of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), focusing on the simplified permitting processes for extracting critical and strategic raw materials.
She is also involved in two research projects on megagames. The first, Switching the Current aims to create a platform for exploring diverse perspectives on energy systems. The second, Melting Polarization – Megagames for New Narratives of a Sustainable Future, uses games to facilitate dialogue and immersive experiences about the possibilities and conditions for sustainable transitions in urban and rural contexts. Reflections on the development of these games are shared by Magnus Persson, the project’s game developer, on the blog Games for Social Transformations.
