För närvarande arbetar Maria Bäcke som programansvarig för masterprogrammet LeaDS (Learning, Digitalization, and Sustainability) och som ledare för forskningsmiljön CCD (Communication, Culture, and Diversity) vid Jönköping University. Hon är också senior medkoordinator av EARLI SIG 21 “Diversity in Education“, medlem av redaktionen för Learning, Culture and Social Interaction, och har doktorerat inom Teknovetenskapliga studier. Hennes avhandling (Power Games: Rules and Roles in Second Life, 2011) fokuserar på makt, hierarkier, subversion och roller i rollspelsgrupper online. Bäckes nuvarande forskning handlar om liknande frågeställningar utifrån ägarstrukturer, makt, subversion, och digitalisering i skolsammanhang och i postkoloniala kontexter. Hon har även arbetat inom lärarutbildningen sedan 2004. 

En del av Bäckes forskning kopplar därmed samman fälten digitalisering, lärande, mångfald och kulturstudier där hon för närvarande undersöker hur generativ AI används i skolor, samt anledningarna till, och processerna bakom, val av digital teknik och införandet av generativ AI i skolan.

En annan del av hennes forskning fokuserar på skolnärvaro, primärt sätt att diskutera och utveckla vägar mot lösning på skolfrånvaroproblematik med elever och personal på gymnasienivå.

Pågående forskning

Bäcke är projektledare för projektet Goda exempel för skolnärvaro som har fått ULF-medel för åren 2025-2026, där forskare från JU och GU samarbetar med skolledare och skolpersonal i Jönköping. Målet är att samordna insatserna och underlätta för barn och ungdomar som antingen inte kommer till skolan (dvs problematisk skolfrånvaro) eller riskerar att hamna i denna sits.

Bokkapitlet "Digital Hållbarhet" kan hittas i den uppdaterade utgåvan av Digital kompetens för lärare publicerad av Gleerups. Det fokuserar på ekologisk, ekonomisk och social hållbarhet i relation till digitalisering i skolan.

Projektet Futures Day - Who holds the future? är ett samarbete med en gymnasieskola i Jönköping, men flera samarbeten med andra skolor i andra delar av Sverige är på gång. Elevers idéer om teknologi och AI:s roll i framtiden står i fokus och vi drar på "futures scenarios" som ramverk. Projektet tar avstamp i ekologisk, ekonomisk och social hållbarhet.

REaD-IT-projektet (2022-nu) undersöker lässtrategier bland gymnasieelever och syngliggör osynliga kompetenser (primärt digitala och språkliga) som vägar mot aktivt medborgarskap.

Bokkapitlet The Unbearable Lightness of Imagination in a GenAI Era har skrivits tillsammans med andra forskare vid JU och handlar om Futures Day-projektet för boken Postdigital Imaginations: Critiques, Methods, and Interventions.
