CSL- Civic and Subject Literacy – Future Education
The research group Civic and Subject Literacy – Future Education (CSL) studies practices for teaching and learning. Focus is on the meaning of language for students’ learning in all subjects and/or integrated subjects’ content.
Focus is on the meaning of language for students’ learning in all subjects and/or integrated subjects’ content. We hold a pluralistic view on various possible literacies for learning, such as the use of language, but also possible recourses for meaning making, such as texts, media, digital technology, and aesthetic forms of expression. In turn, literacies for subject knowledge are viewed as being dependent on and related to the democratic task of education. Hence, knowledge in all its formats, supporting citizenship and readiness to act, is considered as legitimate, and necessary. Possible subjects’ content, like literature, film, textbooks and so on, and the use of this content, will be studied in relation to sustainability in all its aspects. We aim to, in close collaboration with teachers, and students and other actors in society, develop pedagogical approaches and methods for teaching and learning, integrating civic literacies with subject literacies. The latter includes teacher education. We hold forward the necessity of a strong connection between research and practice, and a sensitive collaboration between universities and schools as well as between various stages within education, and types of schools.
