Ownership Strategies in the family business
Ownership strategy is a relatively new concept but a promising approach to solving the ownership paradox. Ownership strategy offers the owner a tool that would be directed and applicable to guiding the managerial and governance systems of businesses. Ownership strategies are created for a specific need: the situation in the family, a certain question in the business, the need to control the group of businesses or the proactive management of the family members’ positions in the family business.
The Finnish Family Firms Association (2020) has defined ownership strategy as follows:” The owning family defines together the values, purpose, objectives, and measures guiding the ownership. These among others are the basis for ownership strategy that creates the framework for the board of directors’ decision making.” Krista and Marita will present two approaches to ownership strategy.
Speakers: Krista Elo-Pärssinen (Family Business Expert, Ph.D., Senior Advisor at Finnish Family Firms Association) and Marita Rautiainen (Associate Professor LUT University, CeFEO Affiliated Researcher Jönköping International Business School)

Welcome to an open seminar titled “The behavioral revolution in finance” with Professor Werner De Bondt, Driehaus College of Business, DePaul University, Chicago.
Modern finance is the paradigm that has directed thinking in academic finance since the 1950s. It flows from a grand vision that aims to reconstruct society with individual rational action as its centerpiece. Behavioral finance took off in early 1980s. Its approach is nearly the opposite of modern finance. Behavioral finance does not assume rational agents or frictionless markets. Instead, it examines the psychology of financial decision-making. Furthermore, the institutional environment is seen as critically important.
What has been learned? A key insight is that financial intuition is fragile. It is frequently and predictably flawed. Since decision processes shape decision outcomes, the study of judgment fiascoes helps us to understand, predict and improve decisions made in households and organizations. Also, widely shared self-reinforcing misconceptions (“euphoria and hysteria”) regularly cause transient price bubbles in world financial markets. Besides opportunities for profit, the errors of naive investors create much risk, sometimes with macro-economic effects. Policy makers have no choice but to pay close attention.
Werner De Bondt (Ph.D., Cornell University, 1985) is one of the originators of behavioral finance. He studies the psychology of financial decision-making. Title
Digitalization for a Sustainable Built Environment
Abstract
The construction sector is a key area that has significant impacts on economy and environment. The sector contributes to countries’ economies, provides direct and indirect job opportunities and satisfies people’s needs for buildings and facilities. Moreover, this sector is one of the main consumers of resources: about 50% of the total use of raw materials, and 36% of the global final energy use. Digital technologies, such as BIM and GIS, can contribute to a more efficient and sustainable built environment by enhancing efficiency, reducing waste, improving monitoring, contributing to better decision-making, cutting time and costs during the construction process, allowing the creation of digital models to predict and control buildings’ performances. In this lecture, I will try to explain the role of digitalization in the construction sector, and how it contributes to a more sustainable built environment. I will also argue that a multidisciplinary research approach has a key role in the construction sector’s digitalization process.

Abstract
Sweden has often been hailed as a textbook example of ‘multicultural pluralist citizenship’ (Koopmans and Statham 1999, 661); that is, a context in which ‘the state not only offers easy access to full social and political rights, but actually sponsors ethnic difference’ (ibid.). While it is true that the Language Law in Sweden overtly ratifies multilingualism, in this talk I illustrate how language policies about so-called ‘national minority languages’ (Finnish, Meänkieli, Romani, Sami and Yiddish) are framed by the three main principles that have characterized a colonial logic: census, maps and museum (Anderson 1991; see also Gal 2021). In order to bring into relief the coloniality of Swedish minority language policy,
I will focus on a language, Yiddish, which does not have a straightforward link to colonialism in Sweden but has posed a series of challenges to legislators. More specifically, I will illustrate how a colonial logic based on the principles of census, maps and museum was used in order to make sense of Yiddish and ultimately argue against its recognition as a national minority language. However, I will also show how Yiddish language activists reacted through ‘affective practices’ (Wetherell 2012), which led to the official recognition of Yiddish in the end. Through these examples, I not only hope to engage with current discussions about decolonial perspectives in applied linguistics (Pennycook and Makoni 2021) but also give an example of a somewhat overlooked aspect of language policy, namely its affective dimensions (see also Årman 2020).
