Progress of doctoral studies - the Doctoral Ladder

The Doctoral Ladder consists of five steps, illustrating the four years (48 months) of full-time doctoral studies. When admitted to a doctoral programme at JIBS, the doctoral student starts at step 1 and moves up to the next step, when he/she has fulfilled the criteria required for that step. The criteria for each step vary between research subjects and whether you are writing a monograph or a compilation thesis.

In the research subject area Business Administration the amount of course credits required also varies depending by which study plan the doctoral student was admitted. The study plan valid before September 1st, 2010 requires 120ECTS credits and the study plan, which came into effect on September 1st, 2010 requires 90ECTS credits. More information on this can be found here.

The forms for moving up the ladder for each subject area are listed in the research subject area specific forms in the column to the right.

Step-by-step procedure:

  • The doctoral student fills out the form "moving up the ladder", which is then signed by the doctoral student and the supervisor.
  • The form, as well as necessary attachments listed on the form, are to be submitted by hard-copy and e-mail to Monica Bartels, secretary of the Doctoral student Progress Committee.
  • The committee takes a decision whether to approve the request for moving up the ladder.
  • The personnel department at JIBS are notified and (for doctoral students employed by JIBS) will calculate the salary raise connected to the step on the ladder.
