Diogenis Baboukardos

Business Administration focusing on Accounting

Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Diogenis and I am a Doctoral Candidate in Business Administration (major in Accounting) at the Department of Accounting and Law. I am originally from the second largest city of Greece, Thessaloniki, which lies on the northern coast of Aegean Sea. After a 5-year journey in accounting practice and after having completed my Bachelor and Master studies in Accounting and Finance, I moved to Jönköping in 2010 where I first worked as a research assistant. Later in that year I was admitted into the doctoral programme.

How did you decide to become a doctoral student? And why did you decide to do it at JIBS?

Accounting, like all social sciences, is very much about human behavior. Even though I have always been very interested in issues related to human behavior, I had not thought of doing research on that (or on any other!) field until the second year of my bachelor studies when I participated in a research project in the field of statistics. This experience intrigued me so much that since then I have not stopped being, research-wise, on the go!

By pure but gratifying coincidence, in the summer of 2009 I met some of JIBS’s accounting faculty and we soon realized that we shared a lot of common research interests. During that period the department was seeking for research assistants and I was finalizing my master thesis. Soon I received an invitation for a job interview and a few months later I got my first position at JIBS. Having been a “JIBSer” for almost three years now, I am very happy for my decision to join JIBS.

What are your main research interests?

My main research interest focuses on how and why humans act and react in relation to financial and non-financial (environmental) reporting. I investigate listed companies’ financial and non-financial reporting behavior, what determines it and what consequences it has on the stock market.

What is the best thing with working at JIBS?

If I was to describe JIBS using three words I would say that it is open-minded, ambitious and of course international. Over and above all though, JIBS is unique for its vibrant and colorful community. Our relatively small business school is a real mosaic of the whole world.
