Bertil Carlsson

Informatics

Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Bertil Carlsson and I was born in Malmö, Sweden. In short I’m a football crazy, photography-loving “Malmöit”. My childhood and younger teenage years revolved around basketball and football, and I’m still very passionate about both. However, as me and my friends grew older the dreams of becoming a pro faded (but only slightly...) so instead I decided that I would move to Linköping and do my BSc and MSc in Cognitive Science. Having graduated it didn’t take long before I found myself in Jönköping.

How did you decide to become a doctoral student? And why did you decide to do it at JIBS?

I decided quite early into my masters that I wanted to do a PhD; a professional working life wasn’t something that interested me. Since I wanted a change of scenery, I decided that if possible I would try to do my PhD somewhere else than in Linköping. However, I never would have guessed that I would end up in Jönköping. Coming to JIBS was one of those events that are impossible to plan for, they just happen, so I guess in a sense JIBS found me more than I found JIBS. But having visited the campus and experienced the international environment, the decision was quite easy to make.

What are your main research interests?

I study the impacts of e-services from a socio-economic perspective. In my studies I have developed indicators in order to capture the outcomes of innovations in the context of Ambient Assisted Living to better understand the relationship between private and public actors when large-scale investment decisions are to be taken. My research is of multidisciplinary character and combines approaches from e.g. informatics, cognitive science, design, economics, etc.

What is the best thing with working at JIBS?

I guess I have to say the same thing as many others have before me: the international environment. Being able to take part in the education of students from all over the world is something that I really enjoy. I also have to mention the opportunity for me to work with some great people here at JIBS.
