This program is taught in Swedish with courses taught in English semester 5.

As a lighting designer, you can create conditions for people to thrive and offer well-planned technical solutions for lighting. You design and plan lighting for both indoor and outdoor environments. You get a broad competence in architectural lighting design and after completing the programme you will be able to create lighting environments that make people feel good and that are sustainable for our environment.

The demand for competent lighting designers in the construction and architectural industry is great and after completing the programme, you will be a sought-after asset in the labor market. Old light sources are now being phased out and replaced by new ones, the control of lighting is being developed and standards are being reviewed. During the training, you will gain insight into the ongoing change and learn to handle all tools so you can plan and create energy-efficient, functional and good lighting.

Content

The education aims to build and develop lighting design competence for architectural lighting in public environments both indoors and outdoors. Through research-based teaching and good collaboration with the business community, a holistic view and understanding of the industry's challenges and needs is created. The industry participates through guest lectures, workshops, study visits and labour market days.

The programme is based on the cornerstones of technology, design, communication and science. Project work is applied in five courses and in the elective courses to promote both an independent and responsible way of working and the ability to collaborate. The projects include a sales presentation and a project report with reflections, analysis and discussion of experiences made within the project.

In the courses Industry Placed Course and Thesis Project, you use and deepen your previously acquired knowledge and skills. Here, too, you can create important contacts for your future professional career and exchange experiences and knowledge with the various players in the industry.

We offer two spots per university and year. Through student exchange, you get the chance to acquire international contacts, experiences and qualifications, which is highly valued by future employers.

Career Prospects

The demand for competence in lighting design is increasing. After completing your programme, you can, for example, work with planning, sales, information, programming, visualization, product development, design, etc. in the field of lighting. The education is broad, planning-oriented and adapted to provide good tools to become part of an industry where development progresses rapidly.

Previous students have gone to work as, for example, BIM specialist at Fagerhult, Programmer and System Integrator at the Control Department, Lighting Designer at Hidealite and Salesman and lighting consultant at Erco Lighting.
